Andrew Brown LLB, GDLP – the Firm’s Principal, has practised law since 1984, specialising in property and commercial law. In that time, firm mergers and de-mergers have given Andrew invaluable experience in commercial law firms of all sizes, including Adelaide’s (then) largest Finlaysons. After 7 years in partnership with Adelaide commercial law firm Grope Hamilton Brown, Andrew established Brown & Associates in March 1998.
Andrew has served on the Property Management and Law Committee of the Property Council of Australia (South Australian Division), Australia’s pre-eminent commercial property lobby and interest group. He has also served on the Property Committee of the Law Society of South Australia and has tutored in property law at the Law School of the Flinders University.
Andrew has presented numerous papers to legal practitioners at the Law Society of South Australia and for private legal education companies, regarding commercial tenancy law in South Australia. He has also made submissions on behalf of the Property Committee of the Law Society of South Australia to Members of State Parliament regarding proposed amendments to the Retail and Commercial Leases Act.
Andrew’s representation of clients’ interests in an extremely practical and effective manner for over 30 years has seen him develop a significant number of long standing client relationships in the property industry and a strong reputation for consistently achieving his clients’ objectives.
David Dew LLB, B.Ec, GDLP – joined Andrew in partnership in 2005. David has over 21 years of commercial and property law experience. Prior to joining Brown & Associates, David practised for 8 years with Cowell Clarke (a leading medium sized Adelaide commercial law firm), where he specialised in property law.
David holds an Economics degree (with an Accounting major), in addition to his Law degree. David has presented papers on commercial tenancy enforcement in South Australia to legal practitioners at the Law Society of South Australia. David has also presented on commercial sales and leasing topics at seminars hosted by the Commercial and Industrial Division of the Real Estate Institute of South Australia and the Australian Property Institute (SA Division).
David currently serves on the Property Committee of the Law Society of South Australia and on the Shopping Centres Committee of the Property Council of Australia (SA Division). He also lectures to law graduates on invitation from the Law Society of South Australia.
Over recent years, David has overseen a number of major property transactions, including the acquisitions by PPI Funds Management syndicates of the Seaford Shopping Centre (SA) for $72m in 2008, of the Nambour Shopping Centres (QLD) for $52m in 2009 and of the Taree Shopping Centre (NSW) for $53m in 2011. David’s attention to detail in such matters is second to none.
David Hopkins LLB, GCLP – has been practising commercial property and estate planning law for 16 years, initially with a leading Adelaide commercial law firm, O’Loughlins. David joined the partnership in 2007 and continues to specialise in commercial property law and estate planning law.
David is a member of the Property Council of Australia and has made a number of presentations to clients, industry groups and students regarding estate planning and commercial leasing. David also serves on the Succession Committee and the Property Committee of the Law Society of South Australia and has made numerous presentations to solicitors at the Law Society of South Australia on commercial leasing, including the legal and practical complexities of sub-leasing and issues arising under retail leasing legislation. David also gives presentations to the Real Estate Institute of South Australia.
Richard Phillips LLB – commercial solicitor specialising in contractual and property issues, finance and banking, and general business dealings. Within the property sector he has a particular focus on commercial transactions and development work, vineyard and winery transactions, as well as trusts and commercial leases. Richard is also very experienced in business sale transactions, joint ventures and shareholder agreements.
Following 15 years as a sole proprietor practitioner, Richard merged his private practice with Donaldson Walsh in 2009, and in July 2014 joined Brown & Associates as a Consultant.
While his business structure has changed, Richard’s practice areas and his methodical and pragmatic approach to his client’s matters remains the same.
Richard continues to work with an established client base that includes property investors, builders and developers, finance companies and brokers, as well as accountants, real estate agents and conveyancers who refer their clients for assistance.
Richard served for a number of years on the Property Committee of the Law Society of South Australia and has presented many papers in relation to property and other commercial topics.
